Ulsan Hyundai - Sanfrecce Hiroshima Preview: Asian clubs vie for consolation after Club World Cup exits

J-League champions Sanfrecce are relishing the match and see it as a crucial test ahead of next year's Asian Champions League campaign, while Ulsan are eager to seize fifth place

There will be an all-Asian encounter in the match for fifth place at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2012 when Ulsan Hyundai FC and Sanfrecce Hiroshima do battle at the Toyota Stadium. After missing out on a semi-final berth, both sides are out to end their tournament participation on a high.

Ulsan arrived in Japan buoyed by their triumph in the AFC Asian Champions League, but fell behind early on in their quarter-final against Monterrey and ultimately lost 3-1. Lee Keunho, the 2012 Asian player of the year, netted a late consolation for the so-called Tigers, who are now determined to return to the Korean peninsula with a win under their belts.

Hiroshima Sanfrecce, which defeated Auckland (N.Z.) in the opener is one step closer to the last four; opponents (confirmed) as Al-Ahly, for whichever team that goes through, J-League champions did not under-perform, but instead put up a performance worth commending  during their quarter-final match-up against Al-Ahly, but unfortunately for the Japanese; They paid a heavy price for missing numerous sitters. 

This game against Ulsan Hyundai, their neigbours, Korea Republic, captain, Hisato Sato and his mates are gearing up to take everything away from the Koreans, fired up and motivated as mentioned by the relevant officials and club's supporters.

FACTS

Ulsan’s 3-1 defeat to Monterrey was the third consecutive loss for a team from Korea Republic at the FIFA Club World Cup. The nation’s last tournament victory came at United Arab Emirates 2010 when Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC beat Al-Wahda SC 4-1 in the quarter-finals.

“We’re lacking a bit of experience on the international stage. In the match for fifth place we want to represent Asian football in a positive light. We’ll prepare for the game accordingly and obviously we want to play better than we did in the quarter-finals,” Ulsan Hyundai FC coach Kim Ho Gon.

“My players are very tired and on top of that we have several injuries. Nevertheless, we’re preparing as best we can for the next game. We want to play well against Ulsan Hyundai. This match in international competition is also good preparation for the AFC Champions League next year,” Sanfrecce Hiroshima coach Hajime Moriyasu.

• Sanfrecce are the first J-League participants in the CWC to not reach the semi-finals.

• The club's last competitive match against a K-League team was in 2010, when they beat Pohang Steelers 4-3 in the ACL group stage.

• The team's purple color was chosen not only for its connection with imperial Japan, but also because of its visibility on TVs during night games.

• Ulsan Hyundai boasts five players with J-League experience: Lee Keun-Ho, Kim Seung-Yong, Lee Seung-Yeoul, Rafinha, and Maranhao.

• After Wednesday's match, Lee Keun-Ho, Lee Ho, and Lee Jae-Sung will leave the team to begin their mandatory military service.

• Goalkeeper Kim Young-Kwang's three goals conceded against Monterrey were the most he has allowed past him in 2012.
